Toulouse-Lautrec captures Lender at mid-movement, as one long leg, clad in
black stockings, juts boldly outward from a swirl of pink petticoats, mimicking
the silk flowers she wears in her hair in form and color. Her low-cut bodice
accentuates her ample bosom, which is tinged green from the reflected glow of
the footlights…

Pygmalion and Galatea
Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904): Pygmalion and Galatea
c.1890 (Oil on canvas, Met) - Gérôme painted and sculpted variations on the
theme of Pygmalion and Galatea, as recounted in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Galatea
was brought to life by the goddess Venus, in fulfillment of Pygmalion’s wish
for a wife as beautiful as the sculpture he created. This is one of three known
versions that are closely related to a polychrome marble sculpture fashioned by
Gérôme…

Valentino plays music for Negri
Federico Beltrán Masses (Spanish, 1885-1949): Pola Negri and
Rudolph Valentino, c.1925 (Oil on canvas) - Valentino plays music for Negri,
who is the focus of the painting… Negri became Hollywood’s first imported star
where her exotic, glamorous appearance and notorious offscreen romances
attracted a great deal of publicity. She had an affair with Valentino with whom
she was still involved at the time of his death in 1926. Stricken with grief,
Negri is said to have thrown herself onto his coffin…
